Relax ... You can really do this ...

Maybe you think you just don’t have a green thumb … that weeds are about the only thing you can grow.  Or, that you just don’t have the time.  Maybe you think it’s just too time consuming and expensive to do this.  Maybe you think you’re just not creative enough to realize this vision.  Relax, you can do this.   Keep in mind ....

1. First, it’s a great way to show off.  Everyone likes to show off, at least a little bit, and your backyard resort will be tailor-made for just that.  It will be exotic, unique and almost assuredly a rarity in your neighborhood.  Just wait until you hear the first “Wow”, or “you can’t grow that here”.  You can be assured that your friends and neighbors will be coming to you, asking how to do it. 

2. The endgame will be worth the effort.  You will be creating your new favorite room in the house. This will be your own exotic little place to relax, entertain, read a book, or just contemplate life.  Remember how those exotic, tropical locales make you feel? That’s what we’re after.

3. The journey is at least as much fun as the destination.  You’re building something from scratch, from a blank canvas. Watching it unfold and come to life will bring an incredible amount of joy and satisfaction. Small, bite-sized projects should be the rule. The overall effort may be large, but view it as a series of small projects. Create a digital scrapbook to track you’re your Backyard Resort’s evolution and I promise you it will become a source of pride you never would have expected.

4. Backyard Resorts and gardening in general is a fantastic exercise in stress relief.  Gardening is consistently ranked as one of America’s favorite hobbies.  Why?  Simple, when life, work, or world issues seem out of our control, it's awfully therapeutic to be outside creating a special place in your own backyard. It is an uncommon opportunity for you to leave any "Type A" tendencies behind. Who knows? Maybe you'll really discover the virtue of relaxing.  

5. Gardening is a great source of physical activity and exercise.  Like all good things, work is required.  You’ll get dirty, you’ll get sore from exertion, you may get a blister or two, and you may even get a sunburn if you forget the sunscreen.  But you’ll be out of the house and office, you’ll breath fresh air, you’ll get some exercise, and you may even get a tan.  Bottom line …. It’s good for you.

6. You’ll increase the value of your home.  This is for all you practical types.  Good landscaping is a sure way to increase the value and decrease the time required to sell your home.  And, you’re going to have something beyond good landscaping. You’re going to have something unique and exotic.
